DML Bookmobile Starts A New Chapter

Ohio 529 CollegeAdvantage came alongside Dayton Metro Library (DML) to open a new chapter for their Bookmobile. On July 29, Ohio 529 joined library and community leaders for a ribbon cutting to commission the new DML Bookmobile! 

Patrons peruse the shelves in Dayton Metro Library's new Bookmobile.According to DML’s website, for over 100 years, “the Library has reduced barriers to literacy and resources through the Bookmobile, which has served patrons all over Montgomery County. In 1923, Electra Collins Doren established one of the nation’s first Bookmobiles, a book wagon, which was used to deliver books to factory workers and outlying areas. Since then, the Bookmobile has transformed into an early literacy tool serving more than 10,000 children across Montgomery County each year.

It serves many children who do not have direct access to a library, as well as preschools, daycares, and child devolvement centers, by providing early literacy programming for children between the ages of three- and 10-years old teaching children early literacy skills and modelling behaviors that promote reading readiness.”

You can find the Bookmobile at the following locations this fall:

  • 3- 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, at Burkhardt Branch, 4704 Burkhardt Ave., Dayton, OH 45403
  • 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, at West Branch, 300 Abbey Ave., Dayton, OH 45417
  • 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, at Huber Heights Branch, 6243 Brandt Pike, Huber Heights, OH 45424
  • 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, at Huber Heights Branch, 6243 Brandt Pike, Huber Heights, OH 45424
  • 4- 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, at Miamisburg Branch, 545 E. Linden Ave., Miamisburg, OH 45342

While taking a tour of the new Bookmobile, you and your family can sign up for library cards as well as check out books. The new Bookmobile will bring books, resources, and connection directly to the community. It is also accessible by all.  

According to DML’s Outreach Services, “The Kids’ Bookmobile visits preschools and day cares, providing story times and opportunities for young readers to select and borrow books they can keep until the Bookmobile returns. Teachers can request special collections of books to complement any subject they might be covering in their classroom.”
