Your savings in Ohio 529 can be used to pay for the grandkids’ qualified higher education expenses at colleges, community colleges, trade and vocational schools, technical schools, certificate or credential programs, graduate schools as well as apprenticeship approved by the U.S. Department of Labor.

And Ohio 529 can be used nationwide at any institution that accepts federal financial aid. So even if your grandchildren don’t live in Ohio, you can still save in Ohio 529 to take advantage of the tax-free earnings, tax-free withdrawals and a deduction off your State of Ohio income taxes and still pay for their education wherever they go nationwide.

Additionally, there is a big bonus for the students when their grandparents save in a 529 account for them. A grandparent-owned 529 account is no longer considered an asset, so it does not have to be included as asset on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). That’s right, a grandparent-owned 529 account has zero impact on receiving free financial aid.
